Any undertaking is in jeopardy the moment safety is compromised. Safety precautions should not be breached – it’s a must.

Safety Precautions for Home Remodeling (DIY or Multiple Workers Involved)

Secure the Work Area

This is for the safety of the workers. Inform the workers about unnoticeable pits, weak and brittle parts of wooden floors and walls, protruding nails or any hazards in the work area so that the workers can repair those problem areas beforehand to avoid future injuries.

Secure Your Family

If a major portion of your home will be renovated, look for a temporary place to stay while the work is being done. This is to avoid discomfort on the part of your family and to give more room for the workers to move around.

In the case where only one or two rooms would be renovated or remodeled, ensure the safety of your family by restricting the area especially from children who could stray around the work area. Brief the whole family about the risks of injuries if ever they try to roam around the premise.

Prepare the Work Area

§    Allocate separate entrances. One entrance would be privately used by your family and the other for the workers and the materials. This way, foot traffic can be distributed among the entrances and the risks of accidents could be minimized.

§    Prevent pollutants from spreading. Isolate any possible pollutants inside the work area by placing tarps or sheets with the same consistency on other rooms of your home.

Work Safety

Safety Equipment

Be sure to wear the proper safety equipment while undergoing construction or repairs.

                        Hard Hat                                          Safety Glasses

                        Gloves                                              Masks or Respirators

                        Hearing Protectors                Work Boots

                        Protective Clothing                    Face Visor

Wearing safety equipment may feel uncomfortable at first, but it won’t just keep you safe while working, it will also make the work a lot easier for you.

Handling Tools

Familiarize yourself with the tools needed for remodeling. There would be high risks of injuries if tools are handled improperly. Use the proper tool for a certain job.

Some of the most danger prone tools are:

1.      Nail Gun. Make certain that the gun is in sequential mode. Pull the trigger and do not just depress the muzzle.

2.      Chain Saw. Be sure that your chain saw chaps are cut-resistant and put on safety equipment like a hard hat, ear protection and face-visor.

3.      Ladder. The ladder could be something so harmless but many accidents happen due to carelessness while working with it. Wear a tool belt for you to have an ease in climbing and descending from the ladder.

Manual Handling

Don’t push yourself to the limit of your strength. Avoid lifting excessive weight and transporting it upstairs or downstairs. This can be very straining for your body. If possible, seek help when performing this task to prevent further injury.

Hazard Waste Disposal

Make sure that there are no traces of any hazardous substances left inside your house after remodeling. In disposing hazardous substances such as lead paint and other chemicals, make sure to comply on your locality’s rules on proper toxic waste disposal to avoid contamination in your community.
